Fish & Chips and Rocky Horror

We decided to try the fish and chips at a local take-out restaurant in nearby Pahoa-- Pahoa Fresh Fish.

A large serving made with ono.
They offer cod and one other type of fish (generally either ono or mahi mahi).  The fish is very good--crunchy but not overcooked and not at all oily.  The chips are also very good.  The coleslaw was not  too mayonaissey.

That night, we went to a fund raiser at the Palace Theater--a screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show.  When we walked in, we were surprised to see Valerie, our architect, in costume selling participation kits (with a noise maker for the party, a rubber glove for snapping, newspaper for the rain scene, a party hat ....).  Valerie is on the board of the theater and puts in a lot of time for fundraisers (the theater needs a new roof) and other activities.

Before the show, there was a costume contest.

Then the movie, as always, was fun. The crowd was mostly young, probably students from the University of Hawaii in Hilo, and a smattering of people there for nostalgia's sake, like us.

Cherimoya Fruit

The cherimoya fruit is native to South America, but they are grown in Hawaii and southern California.  We noticed them last time we were at the market because of their unique appearance.  They're about the size of a small apple.  The flesh is soft and sweet, with a texture and taste a little like a ripe pear.

Local Sightseeing

We went towards the shore to enjoy the views and the good weather.

Later, we went to the Maku'u Market to get some food for lunch.  We tried an eggplant and chicken curry from the Indian vender and a green papaya salad from a Thai vender.  Both were excellent.

Tsunami! (not)

The earthquake off the coast of British Columbia, Canada resulted in a tsunami warning for most of Hawaii (among other places) around 6:30 p.m. We first saw the news online and then watched the television news. The initial reports from the Tsunami Warning Center was that significant tsunami could be expected. A little while later, we could hear the tsunami sirens, although we are not in an evacuation zone. Several cycles of waves hit various parts of Hawaii, but they were small (almost unnoticeable) and no damage was done. After a while, the news had nothing new to report, and they started repeating themselves a lot.  The warning was downgraded to an advisory around 10:30.

These signs are posted along the roads wherever you enter or leave the evacuation area (down the road a ways from where we're staying).

Final Interior Painting/Mighty Sushi

Over the last two days, we finished the last of the interior painting, with the master bedroom and hall bedroom done.

That night we tried Mighty Sushi, a sushi restaurant (mostly takeout) in nearby Pahoa.  The prices were about average, and the quality was good.

More painting

Still more painting to do.  Today it was the second coat on the living room ceiling and finishing the first coat in the living room.
Painting the ceiling. In the center, the vaulted ceiling is a bit more than 12 feet high.
Our resident chickens.  They're semi-wild. They may be escapees from someone's yard, or possibly were born wild.  they like to roost in the thicken in front of the house because of the denser vegetation.  They have almost no natural predators here, but the mongooses will eat their eggs and occasionally attack a chicken.

Kitchen and Living Room Painting & Fashion Show

We finally picked colors for the kitchen and living room/hall.  We chose a warm, peachy color for the kitchen to give it a warm and welcoming feel.  In the living room and hall, we chose a cooler light green.

We also worked on the master bedroom closet.

Picking Colors

On to the second bathroom.

We've been trying to pick a color for the kitchen, but nothing seems right.  We've been through about eight different samples and even tried mixing our own colors.

Back to Painting

We painted one of the two bathrooms.  The color looks white, but it has a little brown (it's "marshmallow").
