We decided to try the fish and chips at a local take-out restaurant in nearby Pahoa-- Pahoa Fresh Fish.

A large serving made with ono. |
They offer cod and one other type of fish (generally either ono or mahi mahi). The fish is very good--crunchy but not overcooked and not at all oily. The chips are also very good. The coleslaw was not too mayonaissey.
That night, we went to a fund raiser at the Palace Theater--a screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show. When we walked in, we were surprised to see Valerie, our architect, in costume selling participation kits (with a noise maker for the party, a rubber glove for snapping, newspaper for the rain scene, a party hat ....). Valerie is on the board of the theater and puts in a lot of time for fundraisers (the theater needs a new roof) and other activities.
Before the show, there was a costume contest.

Then the movie, as always, was fun. The crowd was mostly young, probably students from the University of Hawaii in Hilo, and a smattering of people there for nostalgia's sake, like us.
