The earthquake off the coast of British Columbia, Canada resulted in a tsunami warning for most of Hawaii (among other places) around 6:30 p.m. We first saw the news online and then watched the television news. The initial reports from the Tsunami Warning Center was that significant tsunami could be expected. A little while later, we could hear the tsunami sirens, although we are not in an evacuation zone.
Several cycles of waves hit various parts of Hawaii, but they were small (almost unnoticeable) and no damage was done. After a while, the news had nothing new to report, and they started repeating themselves a lot. The warning was downgraded to an advisory around 10:30.

These signs are posted along the roads wherever you enter or leave the evacuation area (down the road a ways from where we're staying).
